Early life and education

Amitabh Bachchan was born on 11 October 1942 in Allahabad, the city in Uttar Pradesh now known as Prayagraj. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was one of the most celebrated Hindi poets of the twentieth century. His mother, Teji Bachchan, was a social activist with a strong interest in theatre. Growing up in a household where language, recitation and public life mattered, the young Amitabh absorbed habits that would later define his screen persona: careful diction, a sense of rhythm in speech, and an ease with an audience.

He was educated at Sherwood College in Nainital and then at Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi. After university he worked as a business executive in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and acted in amateur theatre in his spare time. That period matters to his story because it shows that he did not arrive in Bombay as a well-connected insider. He came with ambition and a remarkable voice, but with no guarantee that the film industry would accept a tall, lanky newcomer who did not fit the conventional image of a romantic hero.

Education: Allahabad, Nainital and Delhi

Bachchan began school at Boys' High School and College in Allahabad and then boarded at Sherwood College in Nainital, where he took part in school plays. He went on to Kirori Mal College at the University of Delhi and graduated with a science degree. The college's dramatics society, which he joined as a student, gave him most of his early stage experience.

After graduating he did not go straight into films. He worked in Calcutta (now Kolkata) for shipping and freight firms, including Bird & Company, for several years in the 1960s. He has often recalled that he was turned down by All India Radio when he applied as an announcer, an irony given that his deep baritone later became one of the best-known voices in India.

A difficult start in Bombay

His film career began in 1969 in two ways at once. He lent his voice as a narrator to Mrinal Sen's Bhuvan Shome, and he made his on-screen debut as one of the seven protagonists of Khwaja Ahmad Abbas's Saat Hindustani. Anand (1971), in which he played a reserved doctor opposite Rajesh Khanna, brought him his first Filmfare Award, for a supporting role.

Success, however, was slow. Britannica notes that he appeared in a string of eleven box-office failures early in his career, including Sanjog, Bansi Birju and Ek Nazar, and that he considered giving up acting. Supporting parts, guest appearances and voice work kept him in the industry while he searched for a role that suited his intensity.

The "angry young man"

That role arrived with Zanjeer in 1973. As a brooding police officer, Bachchan introduced audiences to a new kind of hero: wounded, restless and at odds with a corrupt system. The screenwriting duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, known as Salim–Javed, wrote several of the films that shaped this image, and their partnership with Bachchan became one of the most important in Hindi cinema.

In 1975 he starred in two films that are still regularly named among the most influential in Indian film history. In Deewaar he played a dock worker drawn into crime, set against a brother who becomes a policeman. In Sholay, released on 15 August 1975, he played Jai, the quieter half of a pair of small-time criminals hired to capture the bandit Gabbar Singh. His understated performance, and Jai's tragic ending, gave the film much of its emotional weight.

The "angry young man" label can obscure his range. In the same decade he played comedy in Chupke Chupke, romance in Kabhi Kabhie and a mix of action, comedy and song in Amar Akbar Anthony (1977). Films such as Trishul and Don (both 1978) consolidated his position as the biggest star in the country.

The Coolie accident and a turn to politics

On 26 July 1982, while filming a fight scene for Coolie in Bangalore, Bachchan suffered a near-fatal abdominal injury. His long hospital stay produced an outpouring of public concern across India, with fans holding prayers for his recovery. He returned to the set, and the film was released in 1983.

At the encouragement of his friend Rajiv Gandhi, he entered politics and won the Allahabad seat in the 1984 Lok Sabha election by a very large margin. His time in Parliament was short: he resigned the seat before completing his term, and he has kept away from electoral politics since.

Setbacks, ABCL and a second career on television

Bachchan's films of the late 1980s were uneven, but Agneepath (1990), in which he played a gangster seeking revenge, brought him his first National Film Award for Best Actor. In the mid-1990s he set up Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd (ABCL), an entertainment company covering film production, distribution and events, including the 1996 Miss World pageant in Bangalore. The business ran into serious financial difficulty, and Britannica describes it as having gone bankrupt by 1999.

His recovery came from an unexpected direction. In 2000 he hosted the first season of Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? His courteous, unhurried presence turned the quiz into one of the most-watched programmes on Indian television, and he returned to host it in later seasons. In the same period, Mohabbatein (2000) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001) put him back at the centre of major box-office hits, now in commanding elder roles.

Character roles in the new century

The second half of his career has produced some of his most admired work. In Black (2005), inspired by Helen Keller's life, he played the teacher of a deaf-blind girl. In Paa (2009) he played a child with a rare ageing disorder, under heavy prosthetic make-up. Both performances won National Film Awards for Best Actor. A fourth followed for Piku (2015), a gentle comedy about a cranky father and his daughter, making him the only actor to have won the award four times.

He also made a brief Hollywood appearance in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby (2013), and played a lawyer in the courtroom drama Pink (2016). More recently he has appeared in large-scale fantasy films such as Brahmastra Part One: Shiva (2022) and Kalki 2898 AD (2024), alongside smaller dramas.

Latest work and upcoming projects (as of November 2026)

Bachchan's most recent big-screen appearances were in Nag Ashwin's science-fiction epic Kalki 2898 AD (2024), where he played the immortal warrior Ashwatthama, and in the Tamil film Vettaiyan (2024) with Rajinikanth. He narrated Farhan Akhtar's war film 120 Bahadur (2025) and hosted the seventeenth season of Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2025.

In 2026 he was reported to be shooting Kalki 2, whose first schedule began in Hyderabad in July 2026, and preparing for the eighteenth season of Kaun Banega Crorepati. He also leads Section 84, a courtroom drama directed by Ribhu Dasgupta; trade reports in November 2026 gave it a mid-November release date, which had not been independently confirmed when this page was checked. He is also expected to return as Guruji in Ayan Mukerji's Brahmastra Part Two: Dev, which has no confirmed release date.

Voice, songs and screen presence

Few actors are as closely identified with their voice. Bachchan's deep baritone has narrated films, including Lagaan (2001), and he has sung on screen in songs such as "Mere Angne Mein" from Laawaris and "Rang Barse" from Silsila. Lines from Deewaar, Kaalia and Shahenshah entered everyday conversation in India, which helps explain why his public appearances still draw crowds decades after his first stardom.

Net worth, homes and business interests

The M3M Hurun India Rich List 2025 estimated the wealth of Amitabh Bachchan and his family at ₹1,630 crore, ranking them fifth among Indian film personalities and attributing the figure mainly to investments. Like all rich-list numbers, this is an outside estimate, not a figure disclosed by the family, and it should be read with its date.

The family lives in Juhu, Mumbai. Their bungalow Jalsa is where Bachchan has greeted crowds of fans at the gate on Sundays for decades; Prateeksha, an older family home nearby, was where his parents lived. His early business venture, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL), founded in 1995, ran into heavy debt by the end of the decade, and he has said that Kaun Banega Crorepati helped him repay it. In later years he has been one of India's most visible brand ambassadors.

Legacy

Bachchan's career shows how a single performer can change what a film hero looks like. He made anger, silence and moral conflict central to mainstream Hindi cinema in the 1970s, and then built a second career as a character actor willing to take risks with age, make-up and smaller stories. His ability to recover from failure, injury and financial collapse has become part of his public image, and part of why so many Indians regard him not only as a star but as an example of persistence.
