Early life in Delhi
Shah Rukh Khan was born on 2 November 1965 in New Delhi. His father, Meer Taj Mohammad Khan, died in 1981, when Shah Rukh was fifteen, and his mother, Lateef Fatima Khan, died in 1991. Those losses came at formative moments, and Khan has often spoken of how his drive to succeed was shaped by the years in which he lost both parents.
He studied at St. Columba's School in Delhi and then took a bachelor's degree in economics at Hansraj College, University of Delhi, graduating in 1988. He began a master's programme in mass communication at Jamia Millia Islamia but left to pursue acting. Much of his early training came from Delhi's Theatre Action Group, where he worked under the theatre director Barry John. That background in ensemble theatre, rather than a film family, is one reason his rise is so often described as a story of an outsider breaking into Bollywood.
Education
Khan attended St. Columba's School in New Delhi, a Christian Brothers school, where he played hockey and football, acted in school plays and received the Sword of Honour, the school's top award for an all-round student. He then studied economics at Hansraj College, University of Delhi, graduating with a bachelor's degree, while spending much of his time at the Theatre Action Group run by the director Barry John.
He enrolled for a master's degree in mass communication at Jamia Millia Islamia but left without completing it when television work began to come in. He has since received honorary doctorates from universities including the University of Bedfordshire (2009) and the University of Edinburgh (2015).

Television: Fauji and Circus
Khan first reached a national audience through Doordarshan television. In Fauji (1989), a series about the training of army cadets, he played the lead role of Abhimanyu Rai. He followed it with Circus (1989), among other series. Television gave him visibility and a reputation for restless energy, and it opened doors in Bombay, where he moved in 1991, the same year he married Gauri Chhibber.

Film debut and the anti-hero years
His first released film, Deewana, came out in June 1992 and was a hit. He had ten releases between 1992 and 1994, including Chamatkar, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. What set him apart was a willingness to play characters a conventional leading man would refuse. In Baazigar (1993) he played a man who commits murder to avenge his family, and in Darr (1993) an obsessive stalker. Anjaam (1994) took him further into dark territory. Rather than damaging his image, these roles made audiences curious about him.
Baazigar also began his long screen partnership with Kajol, and Darr began his association with the director Yash Chopra. Both relationships would shape the next phase of his career.
The romantic hero
In 1995 Khan starred in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, directed by Aditya Chopra for Yash Raj Films. The story of two young non-resident Indians who fall in love in Europe, and of a hero determined to win over the heroine's father rather than elope, became one of the most loved films in Hindi cinema. It famously ran for years at Mumbai's Maratha Mandir cinema and earned Khan his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Over the next decade he defined the romantic lead in films such as Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) and Veer-Zaara (2004). He also played tragic romantic heroes, notably in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se.. (1998) and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas (2002). His signature arms-outstretched pose became one of the most recognisable images in Indian popular culture.
Range beyond romance
Khan's most critically admired work often came when he stepped away from formula. In Swades (2004) he played a NASA scientist who returns to an Indian village. In Chak De! India (2007) he played the disgraced coach of the national women's hockey team, a performance many critics consider among his best. My Name Is Khan (2010) cast him as a man with Asperger's syndrome travelling across the United States after the September 11 attacks. These three films each brought him a Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Britannica records eight Best Actor wins in total, a record he shares with Dilip Kumar.
He also enjoyed commercial success in action and comedy, from Main Hoon Na (2004) and Om Shanti Om (2007) to Chennai Express (2013).
Producer, team owner and host
In the early 2000s Khan converted his production company Dreamz Unlimited into Red Chillies Entertainment, run with Gauri Khan as producer. Its productions include Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om and, later, Jawan. In 2008 he became a co-owner of the Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. He has also hosted television, including a 2007 season of Kaun Banega Crorepati, and he is a sought-after award-show and stage host.
Slump and comeback
After films such as Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017) and Zero (2018) underperformed, Khan stepped back from lead roles for several years, appearing only in cameos. In 2023 he returned with three releases. Pathaan cast him as a spy, Jawan gave him a double role as father and son, and Dunki told a story of illegal migration. Pathaan and Jawan rank among the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
For Jawan he received the National Film Award for Best Actor in 2025, shared with Vikrant Massey. Remarkably, it was the first National Award of his career. The same year he made his first appearance at the Met Gala in New York. Time magazine had earlier named him one of its 100 most influential people of 2023.
King and what's next (as of November 2026)
Khan has not had a release since Dunki in December 2023. His next film is King, an action thriller directed by Siddharth Anand, who also made Pathaan, and produced by Red Chillies Entertainment. It is scheduled for release in cinemas on 24 December 2026, in India and internationally on the same day, and the cast includes his daughter Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Arshad Warsi.
The film's first song, Tu Mil Jaaye, was released on his 61st birthday on 2 November 2026. In a September 2026 fan session Khan said he had suffered several injuries during the shoot, which had to be stopped and restarted, but that filming was nearly complete.
