The BIG Star Entertainment Awards were created by Reliance Broadcast Network, the company behind 92.7 BIG FM, in association with STAR India. Unlike jury-led awards, they were promoted as entirely viewer-driven: audiences chose both nominees and winners by SMS and online voting across film, television, music and sport. The first edition took place in December 2010, and the awards ran until 2015.

The 2012 ceremony

The third BIG Star Entertainment Awards ceremony was held on Sunday, 16 December 2012, at the Andheri Sports Complex in Mumbai. As in previous years it was recorded for a New Year's Eve broadcast, and it was shown on Star Plus on 31 December 2012. Categories covered the "most entertaining" films, actors, songs, singers, television shows and sports personalities of the year.

Leading winners

Shah Rukh Khan won two awards. He was named Entertainer of the Year for Yash Chopra's Jab Tak Hai Jaan, and he shared the award for Best Romantic On-Screen Couple with his co-star Katrina Kaif. In a statement he thanked Yash Chopra, who had died in October 2012, and said Jab Tak Hai Jaan would always be a special film for him.

Barfi!, Anurag Basu's comedy-drama about a deaf and mute young man in Darjeeling, was the evening's most successful film. Priyanka Chopra won the top female acting award for her role as Jhilmil, and Anurag Basu was named Most Entertaining Director. Barfi! also won Most Entertaining Romantic Film. Ranbir Kapoor was honoured for his performance in the title role; contemporary news reports describe his award as best actor, while later award listings record it in the romantic-role category, so the exact category name differs between sources.

Abhishek Bachchan won the comedy acting award for Rohit Shetty's Bol Bachchan, and thanked the film's whole cast and crew on social media.

Notable nominees

The 2012 nominations reflected one of Hindi cinema's strongest commercial years. Barfi! was nominated for Most Entertaining Film, Ileana D'Cruz for the female debut award, Pritam for Most Entertaining Music and Mohit Chauhan for Most Entertaining Singer (Male) for "Ala Barfi". Other films in contention included Ek Tha Tiger, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Agneepath, Kahaani, Vicky Donor and Rowdy Rathore.

Why the results differ from other awards

Because winners were chosen by public vote, BIG Star results often favoured the year's most popular stars and films rather than critics' choices. Barfi! did well with both audiences and juries that season, and went on to win Best Film at the Filmfare Awards in January 2013.

Full category-by-category winners lists from 2012 survive mainly on fan sites and forums, and some of these disagree on category names. This page includes only results confirmed by named news reports or by consistent later award listings.
