Sa Re Ga Ma and Devdas

In 2000, at 16, she won the children's special of Sa Re Ga Ma on Zee TV. Leela Bhansali, the mother of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was watching and called her son to listen. Bhansali later said Ghoshal's voice had the innocence he wanted for Paro, Aishwarya Rai's character in Devdas.

She sang five songs in Devdas (2002): "Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka", "Bairi Piya", "Chalak Chalak", "Morey Piya" and "Dola Re Dola". She recorded "Bairi Piya" with Udit Narayan while studying for her Class 12 exams, taking her books to the studio. The soundtrack won her the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer, the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for "Dola Re Dola" and the Filmfare R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent, all with her first film.

The 2000s: becoming the leading female voice

She won the Filmfare Award again for "Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai" from Jism (2003). "Dheere Jalna" from Paheli (2005) and "Yeh Ishq Haaye" from Jab We Met (2007) brought her second and third National Awards. "Barso Re" from Guru (2007), composed by A. R. Rahman, and "Teri Ore" from Singh Is Kinng (2008) won her more Filmfare Awards.

In 2008 she received a fourth National Award for two songs at once: "Pherari Mon" from the Bengali film Antaheen and "Jeev Rangla" from the Marathi film Jogwa. That's typical of her career. She has recorded in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and several other languages, and has won ten Filmfare Awards South.

Dabangg to Aashiqui 2

In the 2010s she sang on many of Hindi cinema's biggest hits. "Tere Mast Mast Do Nain" from Dabangg (2010) was a duet with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and "Teri Meri" from Bodyguard (2011) paired them again.

She sang "Chikni Chameli", Ajay–Atul's dance number from Agneepath (2012), and the female version of "Sunn Raha Hai" from Aashiqui 2 (2013), the album that also made Arijit Singh a star. The two later sang "Manwa Laage" together for Happy New Year (2014).

Bhansali, Deewani Mastani and Ghoomar

Her partnership with Sanjay Leela Bhansali continued for two decades. "Deewani Mastani" from Bajirao Mastani (2015) and "Ghoomar" from Padmaavat (2018), a song based on a Rajasthani folk dance, each won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer, her fifth and sixth in that category. In 2022 she sang "Jab Saiyaan" for his Gangubai Kathiawadi, which critics picked as one of the year's best songs.

Her fifth National Award came for "Mayava Chayava", a mostly Telugu version of A. R. Rahman's Tamil song "Maayava Thooyava" from Iravin Nizhal, at the 69th National Film Awards. She was the first singer to win a National Award for a bilingual song, and the first to win for recordings in five languages.

She has appeared five times in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list, and in 2017 she became the first Indian singer with a wax figure at Madame Tussauds in Delhi. On 29 Aug 2026 she received the Asha Bhosle Award in Pune.

She has also judged several television singing contests, returning to the kind of show that started her career.

Personal life

She married Shiladitya Mukhopadhyaya, a friend since childhood, in a traditional Bengali ceremony on 5 Feb 2015, after ten years together. He's a technology executive who has worked as global head of Truecaller for Business. Their son was born in Mumbai on 22 May 2021.

Voice and style

Critics praise her clear tone, accurate pitch and the classical grounding that lets her move from a thumri-style ballad such as "Bairi Piya" to a dance number such as "Chikni Chameli". She's often compared with Lata Mangeshkar, whose songs she grew up singing, and with Sunidhi Chauhan, the other defining female voice of her generation.
