The ETC Bollywood Business Awards are unusual among Indian film awards because they are decided by commercial performance rather than by juries or public votes. Films and stars are honoured for what they earned at the box office. The third edition, covering films released in 2012, was broadcast on ETC on 5 January 2013 and hosted by the trade analyst Komal Nahta.

Why 2012 was a record year
2012 was a remarkable year for Hindi cinema at the box office. Trade reports at the time counted nine films that crossed the ₹100-crore mark, a record for a single year, during the centenary year of Indian cinema. Major hits included Agneepath, Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore, Bol Bachchan, Ek Tha Tiger, Barfi!, Son of Sardaar, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Dabangg 2. That gave the awards an unusually crowded field in nearly every category.
Nominations
Nominations were drawn from the year's top earners. Barfi!, for example, was nominated for Highest Grosser of the Year, with Anurag Basu nominated for Top Grossing Director and Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra nominated as Most Profitable Actor and Actress. Other leading contenders included Ek Tha Tiger, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Rowdy Rathore, Housefull 2 and Dabangg 2.
The winners
Ek Tha Tiger, Kabir Khan's spy thriller starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, dominated the evening. It was named Top Grosser of the Year and also won Best Marketed Film and Highest Single-Day Collection. Kabir Khan took Top Grossing Director, Yash Raj Films was Most Profitable Banner, and Aditya Chopra was Most Profitable Producer.
Salman Khan was named Most Profitable Actor for the third year running, and Katrina Kaif won Most Profitable Actress, taking over from Kareena Kapoor, who had won for 2011. The separate Highest Grossing Actor and Actress awards, which measure total earnings across a star's releases, went to Akshay Kumar, for Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore, Joker and OMG – Oh My God!, and to Sonakshi Sinha, for Rowdy Rathore, Joker and Dabangg 2. Shah Rukh Khan was named Most Profitable Actor Overseas.

How to read these awards
Because the ETC awards follow box-office figures, they say more about commercial success than artistic merit. In the same season Barfi! won Best Film at the Filmfare Awards, while Ek Tha Tiger dominated the business awards. Read together, the two sets of results give a fuller picture of Hindi cinema in 2012.
Box-office numbers for Hindi films are reported differently by producers, distributors and trade sites, so exact collection figures for these films vary between sources. The award results above match two independent contemporary reports.
