A childhood on the move
Katrina Kaif was born Katrina Turcotte in British Hong Kong on 16 July 1983. Her mother, Suzanne, is a British lawyer and charity worker, and her father, Mohammad Kaif, is a businessman of Kashmiri descent who lives in the United States. Her parents separated when she was a child, and she has said that she and her seven siblings were raised by their mother.
Because of her mother's charity work, the family moved often: from Hong Kong to China and Japan, then to France, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium and Hawaii, before settling in London. The children were taught at home by a series of tutors. Katrina received her first modelling assignment at 14, for a jewellery campaign in Hawaii, and later worked as a fashion model in London.
Family and education
Kaif's father, Mohammed Kaif, is a British businessman of Kashmiri descent, and her mother, Suzanne Turquotte, is a British lawyer and charity worker. Her parents separated when she was a child and she was raised by her mother. She is one of eight children, with three older sisters, three younger sisters and one brother; her younger sister Isabelle Kaif is also an actress.
Because her mother's charity work took the family from country to country, including China, Japan, France, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium and Hawaii, before settling in London, Kaif did not attend school in the usual way. She has said she was taught at home by her mother and by tutors, and began modelling as a teenager. She later learned Hindi for her film work, and her early voice roles were dubbed.

From the London runway to Boom
At a fashion show in London, the filmmaker Kaizad Gustad offered her a role in his heist film Boom (2003), alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff and Gulshan Grover. Boom failed at the box office, but Katrina stayed on in India. She took her father's surname, Kaif, which she thought would be easier for Indian audiences, and built a successful modelling career, walking for designers at India Fashion Week and appearing in the first Kingfisher Calendar.
Her limited Hindi made film work hard to come by at first, and her voice was dubbed in some early roles. She appeared in the Telugu film Malliswari (2004) before her first Hindi success, the romantic comedy Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? (2005), opposite Salman Khan.

Namastey London and a string of hits
Katrina's career took off in 2007, when she had four hits in one year. The most important was Vipul Shah's Namastey London, in which she played Jasmeet, a British Indian woman reluctant to marry the Punjabi man her father has chosen. She drew on her own years in London for the role. Further successes followed with Singh Is Kinng (2008), Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) and Raajneeti (2010).
Critics were often unkind about her early acting, and she was criticised for taking decorative roles in male-led films. Kabir Khan's New York (2009), in which she played a student caught up in the aftermath of 9/11, brought her first Filmfare nomination for Best Actress. A second followed for the comedy Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011). In Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) she played a diving instructor who changes Hrithik Roshan's character's outlook on life.
Ek Tha Tiger and the action years
In 2012 Katrina starred opposite Salman Khan in Kabir Khan's spy thriller Ek Tha Tiger, playing a Pakistani agent. It was the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, and at the ETC Bollywood Business Awards for 2012 she was named Most Profitable Actress. Later that year she starred with Shah Rukh Khan in Yash Chopra's final film, Jab Tak Hai Jaan; the pair won Best Romantic On-Screen Couple at the BIG Star Entertainment Awards.
The action films Dhoom 3 (2013) and Bang Bang! (2014) were also among the biggest hits of the decade. After a run of disappointments, she returned to success with Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), Bharat (2019), Rohit Shetty's Sooryavanshi (2021) and Tiger 3 (2023). Her portrayal of an alcoholic film star in Aanand L. Rai's Zero (2018) won her the Zee Cine Award for Best Supporting Actress, and Sriram Raghavan's thriller Merry Christmas (2024), opposite Vijay Sethupathi, was well reviewed.
Recent films and current work (as of November 2026)
After Bharat (2019) and Sooryavanshi (2021), Kaif starred in the horror comedy Phone Bhoot (2022), returned as the spy Zoya in Tiger 3 (2023) and played opposite Vijay Sethupathi in Sriram Raghavan's thriller Merry Christmas (2024), which brought her some of the best reviews of her career.
She took a break from films during her pregnancy and after the birth of her son in November 2025. As of November 2026 she had not officially announced her next film. Media reports have linked her to several projects, but her team has publicly denied at least one of them, so CareerMasti does not list any of them as confirmed.
